TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MOVE TO CLEAN OUT

Over time, we accumulate lots of things that we don’t use on a day-to-day basis or ever. Moving house can be a good time to clean out and throw away or donate everything we are not going to use.

Here is a list of things that you probably have at home and that you don’t need to take to your new home.

STEPS TO DECLUTTER AND AVOID FEELING GUILTY

  1. THROW IT AWAY AT THE TIME, don’t leave it for later. If you have decided that it is no longer going to be useful, throw it away immediately.
  2. THROW IT AWAY WHEN IT HAS ALREADY FULFILLED ITS FUNCTION, for example, shoeboxes or domestic appliance boxes. Its function is over, throw it away.
  3. FIND A DESTINATION FOR WHAT IS NO LONGER USEFUL will help you get rid of many things that you don’t use, but that someone else could use.

With these three points, it will be much easier to get rid of everything you don’t use and that takes up a lot of space at home.

The moment of truth has arrived! You’ve already decided to do some declutter, so here are a few things that you probably have at home and should get rid of now.

  • TUPPERWARE that are old, with stains that no longer come out, without lids or half-broken.  It’s time to get rid of them.
  • EXPIRED MEDICATIONS, throw them away! You’re not going to take them any more, so it’s time to go through your Emergency Kit and throw out anything that has expired.
  • MAGAZINES OR NEWSPAPERS that are more than a month old. That information is long gone, and you won’t need it any more.
  • THINGS THAT DON’T BELONG TO YOU. It’s time to return them to their owner.
  • BOOKS YOU DON’T LIKE, who knows, it might be someone else’s favourite book, your neighbour’s, for example. Schools or libraries in your town might want it too.
  • OBSOLETE OR ELECTRONIC APPLIANCES TO REPAIR, face it, you’re not going to repair them.
  • OLD OR WASTED SHOES that you no longer wear or will wear. It’s time to get rid of those old pairs of shoes you have hidden away.
  • MAKE-UP SAMPLES OR CREAMS that are probably past their sell-by date.
  • OLD OR BROKEN TOYS that no one plays with at home any more.
  • REMOTE CONTROLS that don’t go with anything current and that you no longer need.

With this small list, you already have a place to start, although we are sure you will find many other things that you can also throw away or donate.  That’s OK, sometimes you just have to keep moving forward.
